'It takes a man who has the fear of God to relinquish power so easily' - former President Jonathan

On the 28th of March, 2015, after a tension filled presidential election, Muhammadu Buhari emerged as the new president of Nigeria and Goodluck Jonathan conceded victory to his successor.

In a dinner organised in his honour in Geneva, Switzerland last week by Cercle Diplomatique, Jonathan poured out his heart concerning a lot of issues ranging from his foray into politics, Nigeria's well being and why he conceded to President Buhari immediately after the election. He talked about why he made that  historic telephone to congratulate Buhari even when the results were still being tallied.

His full statement during the dinner has just been released and its very revealing! Read it after the cut...

He began: “As you can see, I have not come here with a prepared speech, since what I consider appropriate for this occasion is to just thank you all, members and everyone else in attendance, in a few words, for the dinner and the award, in order not to make the evening look boring. But having said that, I am still tempted to note that if I were to present a written speech, the title, would probably have been “Power Tussle in Africa: A Stumbling Block to Economic Growth.” When Mr. Robert Blum, your President, made his very interesting opening remarks, he introduced me as the former President of Nigeria. He was absolutely correct.

"However, I believe that not many of you here know that the story of my foray into politics has a peculiar ring to it. I entered politics in 1998 and, barely one year after, I got elected as the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa, my state. I later became Governor, Vice President and eventually got elected as the President of my country.
I remain the only leader in my country to have travelled that route.

"As the President, I served out my first term but, as Mr. Blum had pointed out earlier, I lost the bid to be re-elected. I am encouraged by the fact that many of you here appreciated my decision not to reject or contest my loss at the polls, not even in the courts as many people had expected.''

"Again, I have to agree with Blum that it was not an easy decision to take. This is because the allure of power and the worries about what would become of you after leaving office constitute an irresistible force. It has an attraction so controlling and powerful that it takes a man who has the fear of God and who loves his people and nation to relinquish power so easily in Africa.

"I was actually in that valley on March 28, 2015. I never knew that the human brain had the capacity for such enhanced rapid thinking. One hundred and one things were going through my mind every second. My country was at the verge of collapse.
The tension in the land was abysmally high and palpable, in the months leading to the election. The country became more polarised more than ever before, such that the gap between the North and the South and between Christians and Muslims became quite pronounced.

"In fact, it became so disturbing that some interest groups in the United States began to predict indeed, many Nigerians did buy into this doomsday prophesy as they began to brace themselves for the worst.

As the President, I reminded myself that the Government I led had invested so much effort into building our country. I worked hard with my top officials to encourage Nigerians and non-Nigerians to invest in our country to be able to provide jobs and improve the lives of our people.

"We worked hard to grow our economy and to improve and bring Nigeria up as the biggest economy in Africa, with a GDP of about half a trillion dollars”. “Should I then, for the love of power, watch Nigeria slide into a theatre of war, with my fellow country men and women dying, and many more pouring into other nations in Africa and beyond, as refugees? Should I hang on to power and tussle with my challengers, while the investments of hard working citizens of the world go down the drain? I then said to myself, NO!''

I promised my God that I will not let that fate befall Nigeria under my watch, hence the historic telephone call I put through to congratulate my challenger even when the results were still being tallied. I believe that for a country to be great, both the leaders and the led must be prepared to make sacrifices. This is why, everywhere I go, I always advise that the new generation of African leaders must think differently. We can no longer afford to wilfully sacrifice the blood of our citizens on the altar of dangerous partisan politics. It is not worth it.

This reminds me of one of my campaign statements to the effect that my ambition was not worth the shedding of the blood of any Nigerian. Some people took it then as mere political slogan but I knew that I meant it when I said it. ''We must all fight for the enthronement of political stability in Africa, for in it lies the panacea for sustainable growth and development. For Africa to record the kind of advancement that will be competitive and beneficial to our citizens, we must have stable states supported by strong institutions.
That appears to be the irreducible minimum that is common to all developed societies. Africa’s political odyssey can distinctly be categorised into three eras, and probably another that would later signpost its classification as a developed continent”.

"Some may doubt this, but it is no fluke that Africa is growing and rising. However I will admit before you here that we still have challenges. That is why people like us did all we could to ensure that Nigeria, the biggest black nation on earth, would not drift into anarchy because such a situation would have spelt doom for the rest of the continent. It would have affected not just Nigeria alone, but the GDP and economy of the entire West Africa. And if the economy of West Africa crashes, it would definitely affect the performance of the economy of the whole of Africa.

As you know, the GDP of Africa is less than three trillion dollars, with only six African countries able to boast of nominal GDP above $100 billion. Even for those in this ‘elite’ category, you can’t really say that they are rich countries. Apart from maybe South Africa that has an industrially competitive economy, the rest are still mainly commodity exporting countries. Even the case of that of South Africa is not very encouraging, because we have a situation which we could refer to as a first world economic performance, yet the ordinary people live the life of the people in the so called third world.''

In the case of Nigeria which is even the biggest economy on the continent, the reality is that we have an unenviable per capita GDP of $3,203, which is the World Bank average for a period covering 2011-2015.'' “Even then, I still believe that Africa has a bright future; a promising prognosis that is supported by the fact that the continent remains a very fertile and attractive territory that yields irresistible returns on investments.

I believe that in the next few years many more big investors will be jostling to come to Africa, if only we will do the right thing. The process of getting it right has already started with a democratic and increasingly democratising Africa. But we have to deepen and strengthen our democratic credentials through regular, free and fair elections. This will in turn bring about the stability necessary to improve the infrastructure that promotes rapid economic growth. These are the guarantees that would lead us into the next period which I would like to call the era of a developed Africa. I have no doubt in my mind that we will get there some day.

"I will be applying myself diligently to two key areas. First, is to work for good governance by promoting credible and transparent elections. This will bring about the strengthening of our institutions and the enthronement of stability. I also believe that there is the urgent need to create jobs for our teeming young population. This is another area that will be receiving my attention.

I recall that the Vice President of your association made reference in his speech to my achievements in that regard through what we called Youth Enterprises with Innovation (YouWin) and the Nagropreneur programme which encouraged young people to go into agriculture. I believe more programmes like that should be established to promote youth entrepreneurship. That way, we reduce their reliance on paid employment. We will not only teach them to become entrepreneurs, they will also acquire the capacity to employ other people. We will be paying special attention to this segment of our society, especially young people and women.

We will develop programmes that will inculcate in them business skills to be able to set up micro, small and medium enterprises. We shall assist them to access take-off grants when they acquire the relevant skills and capacities. There are many areas that they can go into; food processing, light manufacturing and the services sector are just some of them. I can tell you from experience that this works. As we speak, Our Nagropreneur programme, to promote youth involvement in agriculture value chain, is being scaled up by the African Development Bank presently. It is already being replicated in 19 African countries because of the success of the programme in Nigeria.

I invite all of you here today, cabinet ministers, diplomats and private sector people to remain committed to the cause of improving lives, especially those lives in Africa, and making our world a better place. For those of you that will be sharing in this vision for Africa, I assure you that you will not be disappointed. I am very optimistic that if we encourage young men and women in this continent to develop businesses of their own, the story of Africa will change within 10 years”.

Empire Star Jussie Smollett (Jamal) Gets Candid about his Sexuality in OUT Magazine

Empire star Jussie Smollett is the cover star of OUT Magazine.

The 32-year-old star gets very candid with the magazine about his sexuality. See excerpts below.

On his Empire costar, Taraji P. Henson’s, perspective on sexual orientation: “She said, ‘Who gives a f*ck? I don’t tell these motherf*ckers that I’m straight. Why the f— do you have to tell them that you’re gay?’ That was so O.G., and it just made me love her even more.”

On how he self-identifies: “I am a gay man with an extremely open heart. God, I’ve never had to talk about this, so I’m trying to find the words. If I had to label myself, I would label myself as a gay man. With that said, I believe that love is the only thing that matters, and I would hope that anybody would leave themselves open – not to gender, but to love. I would hope that people would not close themselves off from what could be if, lo and behold, you meet somebody that just sweeps you off your feet, and you just can’t do anything about it. If we truly believe that we are born this way, then why do we try to stifle the way we were born? If I fall in love down the road with a woman, I’m going to love that woman.”

On his perception of sexual orientation: “But this is a conversation that deserves to be had, because we don’t all understand each other. You’re not going to tell me that loving someone is wrong. That does not mean that heterosexuality is not a very real. It does not mean that bisexuality is not very real. It does not mean that homosexuality is not very real. They are all very real. But what I’m saying is, I am a gay man. I am a gay man. I am a gay man. I don’t know how many times I have to say that.”

On waiting for “the one”: I have so much love inside that it pains me sometimes. You end up finding yourself all-consumed by the issues of the world, and that’s something I don’t want to change about myself. So until the love of my life shows up, until I find my boo, I’m just going to be out, up in this piece, a lone ranger.

Wike to Amaech account for N3 trillion

Rivers State government has called on the Minister for Transport and former Rivers State governor, Chibuike Amaechi, to account for about N3 trillion he received throughout his eight years tenure as the governor of the State. Speaking to media aides in Port Harcourt yesterday January 28th, the State Commissioner for Information, Tam George said the State was still reeling from “the catastrophic legacy of the former governor” despite receiving over three trillion naira in revenue in 8 years.

“Amaechi left the most abandoned projects in the history of Rivers State since 1997. Thousands of workers were without their salaries for four months and thousands of teachers were not paid for nearly 12 months. We have so many abandoned projects which huge sums have been paid but projects are yet to be completed. We have the Mono-rail project that gulped over N60bn and it was abandoned. We have the Woji road project awarded at N3bn. There was a variation of the project to the upward of N14bn but it was abandoned. We inherited the project and completed it. There are so many of the abandoned projects. We have the Karibi George 250 bed project where huge sums of money were paid but no single block was laid at the site” he said.
The commissioner said the Wike-led government will explore legal means that will help compel those who looted the state treasury to face the law.

Saraki Reply Obasanjo`s letter

Senate President Bukola Saraki, has responded to a letter from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to him and Speaker of the House of Representative Yakubu Dogara in which the former president condemned the leadership of the National Assembly for planning to buy more cars. Saraki in his reply which was released today January 28th, said members of the 8th Senate are committed to good governance, transparency and accountability and will be responsive to the current economic realities of the country. Read full text of his response after the cut...

Yesterday, I acknowledged that I received a letter from former President Olusegun Obasanjo in which he called the attention of the National Assembly to some issues.
I will want to assure President Obasanjo that the leadership and membership of the 8th Senate are committed to good governance, transparency, accountability, due process and responsiveness to the economic reality of our nation. It is for this reason that the legislative chamber has introduced bold and progressive reforms in the management of the finances of the National Assembly.
This is of even greater importance during a tough fiscal period for our country. Like i said during my closing address at the plenary after our debate on the 2016 Budget, the Senate must lead by example in terms of our own funding, budgets and accountability – showing, beyond doubt, value for money. I have canvassed that we must lay bare the budget of the Senate, nay the National Assembly and its affiliated institutions.
I equally canvassed the need to strengthen the capacity of the legislative institution to carry our effective oversight of the executive arm so that we can ensure the budget leads to the realization of the policy objectives of the Buhari Administration. Again, let me reiterate my position in the speech I made this morning on the need for us to work towards blocking all areas of revenue leakages while also strengthening the anti-corruption agencies so that the little resources that are now available will serve the interest of the overwhelming majority.
As a former President and a father of the nation that we all hold in high esteem , I intend to reply the letter and outline the actions the Senate is taking to address his concerns.
In conclusion, I appreciate President Obasanjo for his consistent role in always reminding those of us in government about our responsibilities to the general public and offering timely advise where necessary.

Signed
Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki

Video: The equipment Buhari is using to fight Boko Haram are the ones my administration bought- GEJ

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, said that the current administration is still using the equipment his administration bought while he was in government,In an interview with International news channel, France24.

“The new government is working hard and I believe they are still using the equipment we procured. The budget is still being debated, no new equipment has been bought, so even those equipment the president is using to prosecute the war against Boko Haram are those equipment we procured and I believe that with what we left behind and the new ones they will acquire, this issue of Boko Haram will be taken to a logical conclusion.

When Boko Haram started in Nigeria, we had no terror experience. Yes we had armed robbery and other common crimes, but terrorism was different because the people involved were not afraid to die. So, you need a different mechanism to confront terrorism, you need superior technology, so that you will be able to stop them even before the attack. We never had the equipment, but when we were confronted, we started acquiring and before I left office we built reasonable capacity and I believe with what we left behind and also with what the new government will acquire, they will be able to prosecute this terror war to a reasonable conclusion” he said
When asked to speak on the ongoing $2.1 billion arms deal scandal, Jonathan said
"This issue always comes up but I always insist that the matters are being investigated and they are in our own courts and in Nigeria where our issues are before the courts, you don't make comments on it. It is considered prejudice.

But one thing you will also realize is that  for us to have conducted elections across the country, all parts of the country, that means that we prosecuted the war against Boko Haram to a reasonable level. Otherwise, we couldn't have been in position to conduct elections across the country and we couldn't have fought Boko Haram with bare hands. This issues of corruption, issues of misuse of funds, being investigated before the courts and I wouldn't want to compromise the position of our laws because while I served as the President of Nigeria, I made sure that the judiciary had their own independence.
I made sure that there is maximum separation of powers between all arms of government. So haven left office, I don't think I will be the person that will say things that will be detrimental to the judicial processes" he said

Its Official!!! Sony Music Entertainment Releases Press Statement To Confirm Deal With HKN Singer Davido

Davido’s recently publicised deal with Sony Music Entertainment has been confirmed by the music giants.

The singer last week went public with news of a signed deal with Sony Music, with photos showing him put pen to paper on a deal.

Details of the deal have now been released, with Sony Music Entertainment releasing a detailed press statement on the nature of the deal. Davido’s deal leans towards music publishing, with the singer set to drop his sophomore studio album this year.

Read the full press statement below:

Sony Music Entertainment have signed accomplished musician Davido to a groundbreaking global agreement. The deal was inked at the Sony Music offices in New York and will see the American-born Nigerian recording artist release his highly anticipated sophomore album later this year.

In Africa, Davido is a bonafide superstar. After relocating to Nigeria from the United States aged 19, Davido set up HKN records alongside his brother and independently released the first song he ever recorded entitled, ‘Back When’. The track was an instant success and propelled Davido to national stardom as he followed this with the release of his second single and pan-African smash hit, ‘Dami Duro’. This track became one of the biggest airplay records not just on radio in Nigeria but across the continent, catapulting him to superstar status and making him one of the most sought-after artists to collaborate with widening his huge fan base and media support.

His debut album, ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ was released in 2012 to critical acclaim earning him countless award nominations and accolades including two MTV Africa Music Awards and the 2014 BET Award for ‘Best African Act’. A world tour followed which saw Davido perform to sell-out venues across Africa, Paris, New York and London. Today, Davido enjoys a massive social media following with a combined number of over 6 million followers across all his platforms.

This deal represents a step forward for Sony Music Entertainment as it grows its roots in Africa. Announcing its official presence in Lagos, Nigeria verifies Sony Music Entertainment’s decision to pursue new business via the introduction of on-the-ground operating entities in an expanded number of markets in the region. The timing of the decision is based on the convergence of a number of positive indicators in Africa’s economy and positive signs in the music industry. Davido is a shining example of this.

Sean Watson, Managing Director, Sony Music Entertainment Africa stated, “Working with incredible talent like Davido heralds a new era for Sony Music Entertainment Africa on the continent. We couldn’t be prouder of our partnership with Davido and we are extremely keen to support his vision to succeed at the highest level in our industry.”

Adam Granite, President, Northern & Eastern Europe and Africa commented. “We are thrilled to welcome Davido into the Sony Music family. We are very much looking forward to bringing one of Africa’s biggest stars to the world. We are also excited to partner with Kamal Ajiboye, Davido’s manager as well as Efe Ogbeni, who will be executive producing the album on our behalf.”

“Music is the universal language that unites and betters the world. It’s always been my dream to take my music and culture to all corners of the world so I’m blessed to be partnering with Sony Music Entertainment on this next chapter. My number one aim is to make my fans and Africa proud” Davido commented.

These Android Apps You Love Are Killing Your Smartphone

Smartphones get slower with use and this is caused by installed apps. While these apps may be useful and hard to do away with, the negative effects they have on our devices can make one consider removing them. For instance, Facebook is one app almost everyone has but it’s one of the most power-hungry Android apps ever.

AVG, an anti-virus maker, recently released a list of apps you should probably consider uninstalling from your device. It’s a huge list containing most of our favorite apps and games.

Top 10 performance draining apps run at startup

These apps automatically start running the moment you boot your device and as expected, Facebook tops the list here followed by Google Play Service. Blackberry Messenger and Instagram too make the list. It’s interesting seeing four Facebook apps (Facebook, Messenger, Facebook Pages Manager and Instagram) on this list. Are you willing to do away with these apps to boost your device performance? I doubt that.

Top 10 performance draining apps run by user

These apps too are performance killers but unlike the ones listed above, they do not run automatically. They will never be initiated unless you run the apps and they do not run in the background.

Top 10 battery drainers run at startup

If you have these apps installed, they may be draining your battery even if you don’t use them all the time. They automatically start running the moment you boot your device. Again, your favorites apps (Facebook, Messenger, BBM and WhatsApp) make the list.

Top 10 battery drainers run by user

Top 10 data traffic hogs run at startup

These are the top apps that contribute the most to your monthly internet bill. If you realize you’re exhausting your allocated data bundle before expiry almost every time, these apps may be responsible.

Top 10 data traffic hogs run by user

These apps too contribute heavily to your data usage but unlike the ones above that automatically start running when you turn on your device, these apps are usually started by the user.

Top 10 performance draining games

Top 10 storage eaters run at startup

Top 10 storage eaters run by user

This list highlights some apps we already suspect but then, you shouldn’t go ahead uninstalling these apps because AVG says they’re bad for your phone. Some of the listed apps are actually system applications which your device depends on to properly function.

It’s also worth mentioning that your phone might be equivalent to nothing but a piece of brick without some of these e apps. Who wants to uninstall
WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and BBM anyway?

You Are Corrupt, Greedy & Lawless” – Obasanjo Writes Letter To Senate & House Of Reps

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo writes to The Senate & House of Reps.

Read the letter below:-

January 13, 2016
Distinguished Senator Bukola Saraki,
President of the Senate,
Federal Republic of Nigeria,
Senate Chambers,
Abuja.
Honourable Yakubu Dogara,
Speaker, House of Representatives,
National Assembly Complex,
Abuja.

It is appropriate to begin this letter, which I am sending to all members of the Senate and the House of Representatives through both of you at this auspicious and critical time, with wishes of Happy New Year to you all.

On a few occasions in the past, both in and out of office as the President of Nigeria, I have agonised on certain issues within the arms of government at the national level and among the tiers of government as well. Not least, I have reflected and expressed, outspokenly at times, my views on the practice in the National Assembly which detracts from distinguishness and honourability because it is shrouded in opaqueness and absolute lack of transparency and could not be regarded as normal, good and decent practice in a democracy that is supposed to be exemplary. I am, of course, referring to the issue of budgets and finances of the National Assembly.

The present economic situation that the country has found itself in is the climax of the steady erosion of good financial and economic management which grew from bad to worse in the last six years or so. The executive and the legislative arms of government must accept and share responsibility in this regard. And if there will be a redress of the situation as early as possible, the two arms must also bear the responsibility proportionally.

The two arms ran the affairs of the country unmindful of the rainy day. The rainy day is now here. It would not work that the two arms should stand side by side with one arm pulling and without the support of the other one for good and efficient management of the economy.

The purpose of election into the Legislative Assembly particularly at the national level is to give service to the nation and not for the personal service and interest of members at the expense of the nation which seemed to have been the mentality, psychology, mindset and practice within the National Assembly since the beginning of this present democratic dispensation.

Where is patriotism? Where is commitment? Where is service?

The beginning of good governance which is the responsibility of all arms and all the tiers of government is openness and transparency. It does not matter what else we try to do, as long as one arm of government shrouds its financial administration and management in opaqueness and practices rife with corruption, only very little, if anything at all, can be achieved in putting Nigeria on the path of sustainable and enduring democratic system, development and progress. Governance without transparency will be a mockery of democracy.

Let us be more direct and specific so that action can be taken where it is urgently necessary. A situation where our national budget was predicated on $38 per barrel of oil with estimated 2 million barrels per day and before the budget was presented, the price of oil had gone down to $34 per barrel and now hovering around $30 and we have no assurance of producing 2 million barrels and if we can, we have no assurance of finding market for it, definitely calls for caution. If production and price projected in the budget stand, we would have to borrow almost one third of the 6 trillion naira budget.

Now beginning with the reality of the budget, there is need for sober reflection and sacrifice with innovation at the level of executive and legislative arms of government.

The soberness, the sacrifice and seriousness must be patient and apparent. It must not be seen and said that those who, as leaders, call for sacrifice from the citizenry are living in obscene opulence. It will not only be insensitive but callously so. It would seem that it is becoming a culture that election into the legislative arm of government at the national level in particular is a licence for financial misconduct and that should not be. The National Assembly now has a unique opportunity of presenting a new image of itself. It will help to strengthen, deepen, widen and sustain our democracy.

By our Constitution, the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission is charged with the responsibility of fixing emoluments of the three arms of government: executive, legislature and judiciary. The Commission did its job but by different disingenuous ways and devices, the legislature had overturned the recommendation of the Commission and hiked up for themselves that which they are unwilling to spell out in detail, though they would want to defend it by force of arm if necessary. What is that?

Mr. President of the Senate and Hon. Speaker of the House, you know that your emolument which the Commission had recommended for you takes care of all your legitimate requirements: basic salary, car, housing, staff, constituency allowance.

Although the constituency allowance is paid to all members of the National Assembly, many of them have no constituency offices which the allowance is partly meant to cater for. And yet other allowances and payments have been added by the National Assembly for the National Assembly members’ emoluments. Surely, strictly speaking, it is unconstitutional.

There is no valid argument for this except to see it for what it is – law-breaking and impunity by lawmakers. The lawmakers can return to the path of honour, distinguishness, sensitivity and responsibility. The National Assembly should have the courage to publish its recurrent budgets for the years 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. That is what transparency demands. With the number of legislators not changing, comparison can be made. Comparisons in emoluments can also be made with countries like Ghana, Kenya, Senegal and even Malaysia and Indonesia who are richer and more developed than we are.

The budget is a proposal and only an estimate of income and expenditure. Where income is inadequate, expenditure will not be made. While in government, I was threatened with impeachment by the members of the National Assembly for not releasing some money they had appropriated for themselves which were odious and for which there were no incomes to support.

The recent issue of cars for legislators would fall into the same category. Whatever name it is disguised as, it is unnecessary and insensitive. A pool of a few cars for each Chamber will suffice for any Committee Chairman or members for any specific duty. The waste that has gone into cars, furniture, housing renovation in the past was mind-boggling and these were veritable sources of waste and corruption. That was why they were abolished. Bringing them back is inimical to the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians.

The way of proposing budget should be for the executive to discuss every detail of the budget, in preparation, with different Committees and sub-Committees of the National Assembly and the National Assembly to discuss its budget with the Ministry of Finance. Then, the budget should be brought together as consolidated budget and formally presented to the National Assembly, to be deliberated and debated upon and passed into law. It would then be implemented as revenues are available.

Where budget proposals are extremely ambitious like the current budget and revenue sources are so uncertain, more borrowing may have to be embarked upon, almost up to 50% of the budget or the budget may be grossly unimplementable and unimplemented. Neither is a choice as both are bad. Management of the economy is one of the key responsibilities of the President as prescribed in the Constitution.

He cannot do so if he does not have his hands on the budget. Management of the economy is shared responsibility where the Presidency has the lion share of the responsibility. But if the National Assembly becomes a cog in the wheel, the executive efforts will not yield much reward or progress. The two have to work synchronisingly together to provide the impetus and the conducive environment for the private sector to play its active vanguard role. Management of the budget is the first step to manage the economy. It will be interesting if the National Assembly will be honourable enough and begin the process of transparency, responsibility and realism by publishing its recurrent budgets for 2016 as it should normally be done.

Hopefully, the National Assembly will take a step back and do what is right not only in making its own budget transparent but in all matters of financial administration and management including audit of its accounts by external outside auditor from 1999 to date. This, if it is done, will bring a new dawn to democracy in Nigeria and a new and better image for the National Assembly and it will surely avoid the Presidency and the National Assembly going into face-off all the time on budgets and financial matters.

While I thank you for your patience and understanding, please accept, Dear Senate President and Honourable Speaker of the House, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Four (4) Methods Corrupt Nigerians Use To Steal Nigeria’s Money - Okonjo-Iweala Reveals

Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has given an insight into how corrupt leaders have looted Nigeria’s treasury over the years.

Okonjo-Iweala, who served in the last administration as Coordinating Minister of the Economy, revealed this in her book ‘Reforming The Unreformable: Lessons from Nigeria'{originally published in 2012}.

As excerpted from the book are 4 methods the former minister reveals leaders and public officials loot Nigeria’s money:

CORRUPTION ON A GRAND SCALE: THEFT OF PUBLIC ASSETS BY HIGH PUBLIC OFFICIALS

“On September 15, 2005, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha(now deceased), (then) governor of the Nigerian state of Bayelsa, was who was arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport and interrogated on allegations of money laundering by officers of the London Metropolitan Police’s Specialist and Economic Crime Unit. From the airport he was taken to his home in the Paddington area of London. A search of the home resulted in the discovery of the equivalent of 920,000 pounds… In all, he was charged with laundering more than 1.8million pounds. He asserted his innocence. He was granted bail, pending trial. He then jumped bail and escaped from the UK disguised as a woman. He fled to Nigeria, where the constitution grants governors, presidents, and vice presidents immunity from prosecution while in office.”

CORRUPTION FROM THE TOP: THEFT OF PUBLIC ASSETS BY A FORMER DICTATOR

“In August 2004, authorities in Switzerland accepted the argument of Nigeria’s lawyers that an Abachar-run criminal organization existed whose purpose was to engaged in the looting and laundering of Nigerian public funds….In the five years of Abacha’s rule, an estimated US$3billion to US$5billion of Nigeria’s public assets were looted and sent abroad by Abacha, his family, and their associates. At the upper end of the range, the amount stolen is larger than the 2006 education and health federal budgets combined..

Of the amount stolen, more than US$2.2billion was carted away from the Central Bank of Nigeria in truckloads of cash in the form of foreign currency and travelers checks… Another classic method of corruption practiced by the Abacha criminal organization involved contract inflation. One particularly odious case was a Nigerian Family Support Program contract for Pasteur Merieux vaccines. The US$111 million contract was awarded to Morgan Procurement Ltd, a company belonging to the Abacha family. The true value of the vaccines was US$22.5million.”

CORRUPTION FROM WITHIN: CORRUPTION BY FOREIGN COMPANIES AND THEIR DOMESTIC PARTNERS IN CRIME

“Nigeria is replete with accounts of such corrupt and corrupting behavior by foreign companies. Siemens, to its credit, admitted paying 10 million euros to Nigeria government officials between 2001 and 2004 to facilitate contract awards. Sometime in 1994, the TSKJ consortium made a bid to provide services to a US$12 billion LNG gas project in Nigeria. This initial bid was not accepted. … In December 1995, TSKJ was awarded a US$2billion contract for the Nigerian LNG proect. Years later, evidence was produced that the TSKJ group had internally discussed making payments of about US$180million to various foreign accounts of Nigerian officials to help TSKJ obtain its lucrative contract.”

CORRUPTION FROM THE BOTTOM: PRIVATE INTIMIDATION

“A systemic rot has befallen Nigeria’s once-solid system of public tertiary education… Tales abound of public health workers asking for under-the-table payments for services and diverting hospital supplies, drugs, and equipment to the privae clinics. Nigeria is bedeviled by very poor provision of public services in education and health, largely because of corruption and undermining of institutions by a small percentage of the population.”

Nigeria will soon receive $750m Abacha loot, £6.9 million Ibori loot- Minister of Justice

The Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation, Justice Abubakar Malami, says the Federal government will soon receive another $750 million allegedly laundered by former Military dictator, Sani Abacha and £6.9 million by former Delta state governor, James Ibori who is serving jail term in the UK over corruption charges.

Malami who made this known at an interactive session with the House of Reps Committee on Justice at the National Assembly Abuja yesterday January 26th, said his ministry will engage Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement with foreign governments to “ensure the repatriation of illicitly-acquired assets.

“In respect of of the recovery of looted assets, the ministry will engage in a Mutual Legal Assistance Agreements or other bilateral and multilateral instruments to seek cooperation with other jurisdictions to ensure the repatriation of illicitly- acquired assets in foreign jurisdictions.

The collaboration will equally involve the engagement of foreign-based counsel to attend to matters on behalf of the Federal Government. Low-hanging fruits being targeted in this initiative include $750 million ‘Abacha loot’ as well as £6.9 million of the ‘Ibori loot’. In the long run, the ministry will coordinate the recovery of billions of dollars in foreign jurisdictions, based on current estimations.”he said

iPhone 7 To Have 256GB Storage & A Larger Battery

As the release of the iPhone 7 draws nearer, the rumors are gradually coming in. We saw an alleged video of the device that showed no bezel but this was quickly discarded as fake even though it appeared to be shot in a Foxconn plant. Another report came in claiming the iPhone 7 could be water proof and self-healing. Of course, this sounded a lot more believable since it was based on a patent Apple filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Also, the next iteration of the iPhone may totally do away with the 3.55mm jack and this sounds rather sensible as well.

Now, according to a Taiwanese website MyDrivers, it has been said that the upcoming iPhone 7 is going to have a 256GB storage. This doubles what is available on the present version of the iPhone considered the most expensive. However, it should be noted that this news is coming from a leakster with a mixed records of several leaks on Apple Products.
Even if this is actually true, we’re not really wowed. Asus Zenfone 2 has a deluxe version launched in Brazil late last year with 256GB storage.
