Alex Badeh heads to Kuje prison

The former chief of defence staff, Alex Badeh will be remanded in prison custody pending hearing on his bail application, the court has ordered.


Badeh was arraigned before Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court on Monday, March 7 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The defense counsel, Samuel Zibiri had earlier filed a bail application which was denied by Abang last werk before arraignment.


In his ruling, Abang said it was inappropriate for an accused person to file for bail even before his arraignment.



While Zibiri had also prayed the court to remand his client in the EFCC custody, Abang ordered that Badeh before kept in Kuje prison pending the hearing on his bail application.

The judge futher adjourned the matter to Thursday, March 10 for hearing on bail application.

He also fixed Monday, March 14 for commencement of trial on a day to day basis.

Badeh came to court dressed in a light brown caftan made of silk material. He was also wearing a dark sunglasses, but the sunglasses was removed once he approached the courtroom
The former defence chief is currently being detained by the EFCC over his involvement in the widely distributed $2.1 billion arms deal popularly known as the Dasukigate.

He is also being investigated for receiving $800,000 from his finance director during his tenure as the defence chief.

But denying all the allegations against him, Badeh also said that he is being persecuted unjustly.

The former defence chief in a statement said all allegations against him are false.
